Cellular Jail: “Jaws of Death”

Cellular Jail is also known as Kala Pani in Hindi. This jail stands as a reminiscence of the sacrifice and suffering of your freedom fighters. During the British era, all the revolutionaries and rebellions who were considered to be a threat for British government were exiled in this jail.  The prisoners of this jail were most independence activist. The example of Sarvakar brothers who did not even know of each others presence despite living in the same jail for two years shows the rigours rules of this jail. Some of the notable dissidents of this jail were Battukeshwar Dutt and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In Cellular Jail the inmates were treated as beasts and were given severe punishments. Here, prisoners were given punishment dresses made up of jute so that when they were badly whipped then their skin gets off easily. The merciless Irish jailor of the cellular jail David Barrie, the self-declared “God of Port Blaire” was famous for his ruthlessness. He was the one who was responsible for inflicting the terror and horror in the minds of all those who were incarcerated. Savarkar has described the Cellular Jail as the “Jaws Of Death”. The inmates of this prison were fettered with shackles made up of heavy iron.

9AM to 12.30PM , 12.30PM to 4.45PM(Open all days except on Sundays)

Entry Fee: Rs 30 per person

Camera : Rs 200 per person

Video Camera: 1000 per person

Film Shooting: 10,000 per day
